Take-Two CEO Admits 'Nervousness' Over GTA 6 November Launch, Reveals Zynga Turnaround Success
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted he's feeling 'nervous' ahead of the GTA 6 launch in November, saying 'I run so scared with regard to all of our releases — just multiply it by a billion this time around.' At the iicon conference in Las Vegas, Zelnick also revealed Zynga has turned into a 'hit creating machine,' explained why GTA avoids product placement deals, and addressed prediction markets as a competitive threat to social casino games.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted that he's wrestling with some nervousness around the long-awaited launch of 'Grand Theft Auto 6' in November, offering a candid view of the pressure surrounding one of the most anticipated video games in history.
"We're blessed that we have some of the greatest creative talent on earth working inside the four walls of Take-Two and all of our affiliates. And I've been at this a long time — and I think the minute you stop being nervous is the minute you should probably go do something else," Zelnick said during his conversation at the inaugural Interactive Innovation Conference (iicon) in Las Vegas on April 28.
The blunt admission came as Zelnick reflected on the stakes of the upcoming release. "I run so scared with regard to all of our releases — just multiply it by a billion this time around," he told Jennifer Maas, Variety's senior business writer for TV and video games. Rockstar Games' 'GTA 6' is the first new edition to the blockbuster franchise since the 2013 release of 'GTA 5,' which set sales records for Take-Two and continues to generate revenue through GTA Online more than a decade later.
Zelnick wouldn't divulge any details on the price of the game, which Take-Two has yet to specify publicly, other than to say the company is mindful of the cost to consumers. The CEO has previously described the expected price as 'very reasonable' and 'fair,' suggesting Take-Two is aware of the sensitivity around a game that many analysts expect to cost between $80 and $100 at launch.
In a notable departure from typical blockbuster strategy, Zelnick revealed that Take-Two has deliberately resisted the temptation to stock the 'GTA' world with product placement and brand integration deals — despite the easy profit such partnerships could generate. "We need to be true to the underlying intellectual property and we need to be true to our consumers," he said. "It's a fictional world and everything has to make sense in that fictional world."
The conversation also covered Take-Two's roller-coaster ride since acquiring mobile gaming giant Zynga in 2022. After a difficult integration period, Zelnick revealed that Zynga has recently rebounded into "a hit creating machine within mobile" that has completed additional acquisitions and achieved "enormous organic growth."
Zelnick also noted an unexpected competitive development: prediction markets such as Polymarket and sports-betting platforms like Kalshi are now creating new competitive pressure on social casino games. "Social casino is a large business for the company and it has been disrupted by prediction markets," Zelnick conceded.
On the broader question of investment in original properties, Zelnick was philosophical. "The costliest thing that Take-Two manages is the investment in developing new ideas and harnessing the potential of cutting-edge technology to deliver amazing entertainment," he said. "It's deeply frustrating when we invest in something over a long period of time and then it fails, but it would be more frustrating to be burning the creative talent."
To illustrate the point, Zelnick shared a story about pulling the plug on a planned sequel for one of Take-Two's prominent franchises. "We had a greenlight meeting years ago, and it was about a sequel to one of our franchises. There was something in the room, some vibe in the room I wasn't comfortable with. I killed it. And it was absolutely the right call — and it was painful, but it was the right call."
GTA 6 is currently on track for a November 19, 2026 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version has not yet been confirmed.
