GTA 6 Won't Have Real-Life Brands, Take-Two CEO Confirms — Satirical World 'Must Stay Fictional'

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has reinforced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not feature real-world brands, insisting the franchise's satirical universe must stay authentic to its fictional identity — and that consumers demand nothing less.

Earlier this week, Take-Two Interactive's CEO Strauss Zelnick took on questions regarding GTA VI and beyond. The interview was conducted by Variety's media and entertainment reporter, covering a wide range of topics from the company's financial outlook to the highly anticipated next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series.

One of the questions put to Zelnick concerned why Rockstar and Take-Two have been against adding real-world brands and advertisements into Grand Theft Auto. It's a question that has grown more relevant as the gaming industry explores increasingly aggressive monetization strategies.

"We need to be true to the underlying intellectual property and we need to be true to our consumers. It's a fictional world and everything in it is fictional," Zelnick responded, reinforcing the company's commitment to maintaining the authenticity of GTA's satirical universe.

As series fans know, Grand Theft Auto is built as a satirical take on real-life American consumer culture. Every brand in the game — from Cluckin' Bell to Burger Shot — are parodies of real companies. This is a core part of what makes the series distinctive, and Zelnick says it's not changing.

Rockstar has also taken steps to enforce this philosophy outside the main games. The company now owns FiveM, a modding platform for GTA Online, and has cracked down on server owners attempting to replace satirical brands with real-world equivalents. According to Zelnick, removing the satire is fundamentally at odds with what GTA is.

The CEO drew a clear line between GTA and Take-Two's NBA 2K basketball franchise, which does feature in-game advertising in realistic arena placements. "That's a realistic placement for them in a video game world where it is entirely expected," Zelnick noted — but for premium titles at $70-80 price points, interstitials would be "unfair" to consumers.

The same interview saw Zelnick double down on the November 19, 2026 release date, calling it final and expressing confidence in what he described as an 'astonishing' marketing cycle about to begin. The CEO also confirmed the company will not be delaying the title further.
