GTA 6 Just Got More Expensive in Southeast Asia as Sony Hikes PS5 Prices
Sony has announced PlayStation 5 price increases across six Southeast Asian markets effective May 1, 2026, raising the cost of entry for millions of potential GTA 6 players in the region.
Sony has confirmed a new wave of PlayStation 5 price increases across six Southeast Asian markets — Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam — with the new pricing taking effect on May 1, 2026. The hike affects the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal.
The announcement comes just weeks before Rockstar Games is expected to ramp up marketing for Grand Theft Auto VI, which launches November 19, 2026. In some Southeast Asian markets, the standard PS5 now costs more than the US retail price of $649.99 after currency conversion.
This is the second major wave of price increases from Sony this year. Identical hikes took effect in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan on April 2, 2026. South Korea, India, Brazil, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa are the only territories left unaffected — but not for long.
The timing is particularly significant for GTA 6. The game is expected to be the single largest driver of PS5 hardware sales in the console's lifecycle. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has said he believes every adult will want to play GTA 6. Rockstar has invested heavily in making the PS5 version the definitive console experience.
Raising the price of hardware in these markets, months before the game launches, directly undermines that potential. Every player saving up for a PS5 to play GTA 6 will now have to spend more. Those who cannot afford the new price represent lost revenue for both Sony and Rockstar.
Sony needs to exercise caution with these increases. PlayStation console sales already collapsed in Japan following the April 2 price hike. In Southeast Asia — a more price-sensitive market where mobile gaming dominates and console gaming is a smaller segment — the risk of pushing potential buyers toward Xbox, PC, or mobile alternatives is even greater.
Rockstar can still sell the game to everyone who already owns a PS5, but the pool of new console buyers waiting for GTA 6 as their reason to invest in the hardware just got meaningfully smaller in six countries. More countries will almost certainly follow sooner rather than later.
For players in affected markets who were planning to buy a PS5 specifically for GTA 6, the advice is simple: buy now before the May 1 deadline. After that, the cost of playing Grand Theft Auto VI on day one goes up permanently.
