Will GTA 6 Come to Nintendo Switch? Platform History, Technical Analysis, and What Rockstar Has Said
GTA 6 was officially announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. But could a Nintendo Switch 2 port be in development? Here's what Rockstar's history, the hardware, and industry insiders suggest.
When Rockstar officially announced GTA 6 on November 1, 2022, the announcement was explicit: the game would launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This reflected the ambitious scope of GTA 6 designed to push PS5 and Xbox Series X|S hardware capabilities to their limits.
Nintendo Switch, in its original form, is based on NVIDIA Tegra X1 ARM architecture from 2015 — fundamentally incapable of running GTA 6 which targets 4K resolution, real-time ray tracing, and AI systems running millions of NPC routines. No version of GTA 6 as designed for PS5 could run on the original Nintendo Switch.
However, the Nintendo Switch successor — widely referred to as 'Nintendo Switch 2' — is expected to feature substantially more powerful hardware. Reports suggest Nintendo's next console will have performance comparable to or exceeding PlayStation 4 Pro.
Rockstar's historical relationship with Nintendo has been mixed. The studio released GTA: Chinatown Wars for Nintendo DS and GTA V for Nintendo Switch, but most major Rockstar titles have skipped Nintendo platforms entirely. Red Dead Redemption 2 never received a Nintendo port.
The business case for a Nintendo Switch 2 port of GTA 6 is compelling. Nintendo's install base exceeded 140 million units. Any game that could run on Nintendo's next console would access a massive potential player base currently entirely untapped by Rockstar.
Industry insider Tom Henderson suggested in 2024 that sources within Rockstar indicated the studio was 'monitoring' the Nintendo Switch 2 development cycle with interest. However, no concrete evidence of active development has emerged.
The most realistic timeline for a Nintendo Switch 2 version of GTA 6, if it materializes at all, would be late 2027 or 2028 at the earliest — following Rockstar's historical 12-18 month post-launch port pattern.
