Glen Schofield, creator of Dead Space and director of The Callisto Protocol, warns studios to clear out of Grand Theft Auto VI's November 2026 release window or risk being completely overshadowed.
Part 1
Glen Schofield, creator of Dead Space and director of The Callisto Protocol, has a blunt message for any studio planning a late-2026 release: get out of the way of Grand Theft Auto VI. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Schofield explained why Rockstar's November 19 launch date has become the industry's most feared calendar entry.
Part 2
"You don't wanna be near it," Schofield said. "Yes, it's gonna bring people back to gaming, and I think that's great for the industry, but not many other games are gonna be sold." He's drawing on a real pattern: the Titanfall 2 comparison still stings. In October 2016, Respawn's shooter launched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and got completely swallowed — a genuinely excellent game that never found its audience.
Part 3
Schofield also points to a structural issue from pandemic-era investment flooding more AAA titles into simultaneous development, creating a year-end bottleneck with too many big games competing for a player base that hasn't grown proportionally. "With all this money that came in during the pandemic, you now have too many AAA games at Christmas," he said. "There are no new people in the market, so if there are too many games out at once, they're gonna fail."
